Hypervigilance

Hypervigilance is an enhanced state of sensory sensitivity accompanied by an exaggerated intensity of behaviors whose purpose is to detect threats. Hypervigilance is also accompanied by a state of increased anxiety which can cause exhaustion. Other symptoms include: abnormally increased arousal, a high responsiveness to stimuli, and a constant scanning of the environment for threats. Hypervigilance can be a symptom of posttraumatic stress disorder and various types of anxiety disorder. It is distinguished from paranoia. Paranoid states, such as those in schizophrenia, can seem superficially similar, but are characteristically different.

Hypervigilance is differentiated from dysphoric hyperarousal in that the person remains cogent and aware of his or her surroundings. In dysphoric hyperarousal, the PTSD victim may lose contact with reality and re-experience the traumatic event verbatim. Where there have been multiple traumas, a person may become hypervigilant and suffer severe anxiety attacks intense enough to induce a delusional state where the effect of the traumas overlap: e.g., one remembered firefight may seem too much like another for the person to maintain calm. This can result in the thousand-yard stare.

Symptoms

People suffering from hypervigilance may become preoccupied with studying their environment for possible threats, causing them to lose connections with their family and friends. They will 'over-react' to loud and unexpected noises; become agitated in highly crowded or noisy environments etc. They will often have a difficult time getting to sleep or staying asleep.

Why am i so crazy and depressed?
Q. I have had a very distressing life. I am only a boy at 15 years. Right now I have no friends and i am obsessed with illuminati (conspiracy theories) and new age. I am in music class. I have had hyperarousal/hypervigilan ce symptoms all my life (which people had made fun of me for). I am always sad and afraid. I am highly paranoid in that i thought everyone WAS makeing fun of me. I used to be a fanatic Christian that tried to convert people. I had only 1 close friend and i copied his personality. I feel a detachment from the world and people greatly confuse me. I have never been abused/neglected but im crazy and think my dad abused me in a past life. i always tell my parents that i am crazy. i am hypersensitive. i write super long 7 page… [cont.]

A. You are not alone many people have felt this way but the truth is you have people that are your friends. You may not realize it yet but someone is always there to help you. I would suggest talking to people that hae been through this too. I do not think people are talking bad about you and if people do not like you its their fault, I hae had some of the same problems you have and what has helped me is each night i would write in a journal. I would write about the day, how i felt and what i want to do tomorrow, also for the first month i would write about my past and my beliefs. This helped me, so do not give up people will care for you and if you ever need someone to talk to I am here.

David W. Powell enlisted for a tour of duty in April 1966 with the US Marines after receiving an imminent draft notice. Believing he would be able to leverage his existing skills as a computer programmer, he never thought all they would see on his resume was his Karate expertise. Even less that he would wind up serving as a Rocket man in the jungles of Da Nang and Chu Lai for a 13 month tour in hell.David's journey from naive civilian to battle-hardened combat veteran shows us all how fragile our humanity really is. In addition to killing the enemy on the field of battle, he was witness to countless cruelties including murder both cold-blooded and casual, cowardice under fire, and a callous disregard for life beyond most people's imagination. With each new insult, he lost a little bit of his soul, clinging to his Bible as his only solace while equally certain of his own imminent demise.Upon returning to civilian life after a two year enlistment, he found himself with nightmares during sleep, intrusive thoughts while awake, a hypervigilant stance combined with an exaggerated startle reaction, and a seeming inability to control basic emotions like anger and sadness. The price he paid for what would only be diagnosed decades later as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder was broken marriages and relationships, inability to hold down jobs leading to bankruptcy, alcohol abuse, and having to hide the service he willingly gave to his own country. In 1989, David eventually recovered through a simple but powerful technique known as Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR) and is now symptom-free. Not just for veterans, TIR has since been successfully applied to crime and motor vehicle accident victims, domestic violence survivors, and even children. His story shows what is possible for anyone who has suffered traumatic stress and that hope, healing, and recovery can be theirs too.More Than A Memoir, My Tour In Hell includesa Photos taken by David's own camera in 1966 Vietnam a Study guide for clinical students a FAQ from the National Center for PTSD a Foreword by Tom Joyce outlining the etiology of PTSD a Suggested Reading list Learn more at www.My Tour In Hel l.com

Traumatic stress, as a phenomenon, permeates across all nations, all over the globe. Literature expounds the often, debilitating psychological effects of trauma, on the lives of victims of crime. Repeat exposure to crime related trauma within the workplace, can result in victims processing their reality and perceiving their world in an atypical manner. This may be due, not only to the repetitive and multiple traumatic experiences themselves, but also, to the fact that the victims have to return to the workplace on a daily basis, in the location where they were initially traumatised. Acute awareness of possible repeat attacks, can create a constant state of hypervigilance and the perpetual 'on-alert' mode may become significantly psychologically taxing on the victim. Within the contents of this book, the impact of repetitive trauma, on the perceptual thinking processes of victims of multiple crime, is described. A sample of 15 adult males participated voluntary in a Rorschach Inkblot Method study, using Exner's Comprehensive System. A concluding aim of the study, is that increasing interest in this subject will result and incentive for conducting further studies of this nature generated. This book is addressed to professionals within the field of Clinical Psychology, Research Psychology and other related psychological domains of study. It is also aimed at researchers and professionals working specifically within the field of traumatic stress. Promise Angels is dedicated to bringing you great books at great prices.
